Victoria First Aid in British Columbia is a workplace approved provider, specializing in infant CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid training or childcare first aid workplace approved programs. Childcare first aid is a training program that covers basic injuries and illnesses of children (victims who are infants, toddlers, and school-aged). There is a large number of programs students can choose from, and various ways to sign up for them.
Enrolment and class sign up
Prospective students who wish to sign up for a training program with this provider can send an e-mail or use the enrolment form. Telephone calls and walk-ins are encouraged as well, but please be sure to conduct your business during business hours. Similarly, any e-mails or forms will be attended to during the same hours.
Program rates and fees
Unlike most training providers, Victoria First Aid lets students pay the entire course fees during enrolment or anytime before the training starts. One of the students’ main concerns is additional expenses that can be incurred during training; this provider assures students of no add-on fees by settling the entire account before training starts. The fees include taxes, tuition, certificates (and registration), and training manuals.
If you are unable to complete your enrolled program, full reimbursements are given to students, as long as the Victoria First Aid staff is notified at least 72-hours beforehand.
Infant CPR and first aid training
The childcare first aid program is 16-12 hours long, completed in two days. Scheduling is very flexible, with private programs also available to students. The childcare first aid program also include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillation (AED) training. AEDs are machines that can detect heart rhythms and apply shock to the heart when attached to the chest.
Special CPR-only classes are also offered by this provider. There are three levels or categories: A, C, and HCP. Each level corresponds to a different victim age group. All three teach trainees adult CPR and first aid while only C and HCP teach pediatric CPR and first aid. HCP is targeted for health care providers.
Certificates
A student needs the following requirements to pass a program:
- Complete (100%) attendance
- 75 % or better in the written exam
- Adequate demonstration of first aid and CPR skills
St Mark James certificate cards are awarded upon completion of a training program. The certificates are only valid for three years throughout Canada. Before the certificate expires, students have to take a re-certification program available at least twice a week at Victoria First Aid, for at least 8-9 hours.
